On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

July 23rd, 2008

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Australian model George Lazenby took up the mantle of the world’s most suave secret agent when Sean Connery retired as James Bond–prematurely, it turned out. Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever before leaving the role to Roger Moore and Lazenby’s subsequent career fizzled, yet this one-hit wonder is responsible for one of the best Bond films of all time.

In On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, 007 leaves the Service to privately pursue his SPECTRE nemesis Blofeld (played this time by Telly Savalas), whose latest master plan involves a threat to the world’s crops by agricultural sterilization. Bond teams up with suave international crime lord Draco (Gabriele Ferzetti) and falls in love with–and marries–his elegant daughter, Tracy (Diana Rigg). Bond goes monogamous? Not at first; after all he has Blofeld’s harem to seduce. Lazenby hasn’t the intensity of Connery but he has fun with his quips and even lampoons the Bond image in a playful pre-credits sequence, and Rigg, fresh from playing sexy Emma Peel in The Avengers, matches 007 in every way. Former editor Peter Hunt makes a strong directorial debut, deftly handling the elaborate action sequences–including a car chase turned road rally through the icy snow–with a kinetic finesse and a dash of humor. Though not a hit on its original release, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service has become a fan favorite and the closest the series has come to capturing the spirit of Ian Fleming’s books. –Sean Axmaker

Customer Review: In the top 3 Bond films
It is almost inexplicable that this movie isn’t more widely heralded as a benchmark for the series, but I’ll give it a shot. First, Lazenby made one of the gravest errors in Bond history by announcing that this would be his only Bond film PRIOR to the movie’s release. I think this made audiences wonder if it was worth getting to know him, and so many passed it by (therefore, the low box office). Secondly, an unfortunate many of us are distracted by appearance, and in this film Bond wears ascots and a kilt and there is no doubt that many of our peers used this as evidence that Connery was more “manly” than Lazenby. It’s silly. Lazenby is a confident, brilliant Bond in the best Fleming tradition, and Peter Hunt knew everything he needed to know about pacing and directorial execution from Hunt’s prior association with the series. One of the best directed, best scripted, most satisfying Bond movies to date. Anyone who considers themselves a Bond fan should have this film in their collection. It’s good every time, and as many here have already noted, it may actually improve with age. Very well Mr. Bond.

Customer Review: George Lanzeby did a great job
Although George Lanzenby only played James Bond once, he did a great job in “On her Majesty’s Secret Service”. The film has good acting and amazing action sequences. Diana Rigg does a phenomenal job as “Tracy Bond”, the only woman to have actually married James Bond. Blofeld is well performed by Terry Savalas. I really enjoyed Lanzenby as Bond and I wish he had done more. This is truly a fantastic movie and one of the best James Bond films.

Customer Review: Amazing Cooking Program
This program can organize all aspects of working in the kitchen. It provides nutritional information on all your recipes, keeps track of what’s in your pantry, tells you what you can make with what you have on hand, and helps prepare a shopping list.

Also, it allows you to make your own cookbooks from your personal recipes.

It has the ability to enable you to scale recipes to your own needs.

The only negative side is the introduction to the various functions of the program is lacking.

Customer Review: Mastercook 9 Dlx
A very complete and capable recipe and dietary program!!

It is not, however, perfect. But, if you take the time to get involved with its features, it is very good!

Customer Review: Great Toy…Exceeds Expectations
Be sure you have the room for this…It is huge. My son loves playing in the tunnels and tents. The cat does too. I would highly recommend this product.
Customer Review: Do not buy this unless you are prepared to fix it.
For $50 it seemed like a great toy. My boys when I bought this toy around christmas time were 15.5 months. I wouldn’t buy this toy unless you are handy. My kids broke it in less than 2 weeks. The idea is great but the material that posts are made out of is very cheap. I ended going to home depot and bought 7/16 wood dowels to reframe the tent and bought 1/2 scheduled 40 pvc pipe to frame the teepee. If you don’t mind fixing it then go for it and buy it otherwise stay away!

Gillette Mach3 Cartridge 12-Count
Customer Review: Can’t live without them.
I’m always amazed at how much these razors cost, but when I compare to other options, I always come back to the Mach 3. I’ve tried electric razors, but anything that’s cheaper that buying Mach 3 blades can’t do a thing about shaving the hairs on my neck. I’d guess that I use a blade every month and a half (long after the lubricating strip is gone), which makes this cost about $16 / year. A fine deal if you ask me.
Customer Review: My husband, a/k/a Wolfman, swears by these
My husband has a thick, dark beard and dainty, sensitive pale skin. These blades work well and don’t irritate his skin. No five o’clock shadow; no razor burn. Using blades instead of disposables saves plastic and you get to hold a nice metal handle. Perfect, huh? Well, a straight razor is more green–it’s forever if you just sharpen it, but he’s not going there.

The South Beach Diet Supercharged: Faster Weight Loss and Better Health for Life

July 22nd, 2008

The South Beach Diet Supercharged: Faster Weight Loss and Better Health for Life
Five years ago, with the publication of The South Beach Diet, renowned Miami cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston set out to change the way America eats. Now he has an even more ambitious goal: to change the way America lives by helping Americans become fitter as well as thinner and healthier…for life.

In the all-new The South Beach Diet Supercharged, Dr. Agatston shows you how to rev up your metabolism and lose weight faster while following the proven healthy eating principles of the original diet: choose good carbs, good fats, lean protein, and low-fat dairy.

Collaborating with Dr. Joseph Signorile, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Miami, Dr. Agatston presents a cutting-edge, three-phase workout that perfectly complements the three phases of the diet itself. Based on the latest exercise science, this ease-into-it fitness program combines low- and high-intensity interval exercise (with a focus on walking) and functional core body-toning exercises. The result: you’ll look fitter and you’ll burn more fat and calories all day–even at rest.

Also included is the latest nutritional research on how specific foods high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a host of phytonutrients help keep you healthy; new and expanded lists of Foods to Enjoy; taste-tempting Meal Plans for phases 1 and 2; and dozens of easy-to-prepare new recipes, including Eggs Frijoles, Chock-Full-of-Veggies Chili, Roasted Tomato Soup, Homestyle Turkey Meatloaf, and South Beach Diet Tiramisu. In every chapter you’ll find inspiring success stories from real-life South Beach dieters and plenty of effective weight loss tips. And as an added bonus, Dr. Agatston answers the questions you’ve most often asked him about the diet since the original book was published.

Customer Review: South Beach Supercharged
Updated info on the South Beach Diet. Easier to follow than ever. One caution, however. If you have a bad back, be very careful in doing some of the Pilates exercises. Go slowly and modify if necessary. Otherwise, excellent.

Customer Review: Excellent book for weight loss and nutrition
As all of Dr. Agatston’s books, this is excellent. The exercises are good, the recipes are delicious and the program for weight loss works. I recommend this book as I do all his other books.

NORTHWEST BOOKS FIRST SUPPLIMENT, BIBLIOGRAPHY OF NORTHWEST WRITING 1942-1947

In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto
What to eat, what not to eat, and how to think about health: a manifesto for our times

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” These simple words go to the heart of Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food, the well-considered answers he provides to the questions posed in the bestselling The Omnivore’s Dilemma.

Humans used to know how to eat well, Pollan argues. But the balanced dietary lessons that were once passed down through generations have been confused, complicated, and distorted by food industry marketers, nutritional scientists, and journalists-all of whom have much to gain from our dietary confusion. As a result, we face today a complex culinary landscape dense with bad advice and foods that are not “real.” These “edible foodlike substances” are often packaged with labels bearing health claims that are typically false or misleading. Indeed, real food is fast disappearing from the marketplace, to be replaced by “nutrients,” and plain old eating by an obsession with nutrition that is, paradoxically, ruining our health, not to mention our meals. Michael Pollan’s sensible and decidedly counterintuitive advice is: “Don’t eat anything that your great-great grandmother would not recognize as food.”

Writing In Defense of Food, and affirming the joy of eating, Pollan suggests that if we would pay more for better, well-grown food, but buy less of it, we’ll benefit ourselves, our communities, and the environment at large. Taking a clear-eyed look at what science does and does not know about the links between diet and health, he proposes a new way to think about the question of what to eat that is informed by ecology and tradition rather than by the prevailing nutrient-by-nutrient approach.

In Defense of Food reminds us that, despite the daunting dietary landscape Americans confront in the modern supermarket, the solutions to the current omnivore’s dilemma can be found all around us.

In looking toward traditional diets the world over, as well as the foods our families-and regions-historically enjoyed, we can recover a more balanced, reasonable, and pleasurable approach to food. Michael Pollan’s bracing and eloquent manifesto shows us how we might start making thoughtful food choices that will enrich our lives and enlarge our sense of what it means to be healthy.
Customer Review: Stick with Omnivore’s Dilemma
I thought it was beyond funny that the first people Michael Pollan cited in his acknowledgments sections were his editors. I thought this book could have used some more editing actually. It was repetitive and overly sensational. I cook my own food and have a garden, and it still made me feel incredibly inadequate at providing for myself, which is ridiculous. I am not entirely convinced that we should completely denounce nutritionism and science because God does it better. Sounds like the same malarkey that challenges evolutionary science. And I thought it a serious weakness that Pollan uses food studies when it’s convenient for his argument to do so. Kudos to Pollan for making a lot of this research and information approachable to the average American, but I feel like he’s preaching the the choir. The people who really need to read this book probably can’t afford it. Bottom Line: I celebrated finishing this book by serving myself up a HUGE bowl of Lucky Charms. Ah…high fructose corn syrup…it’s been a while, my friend…
Customer Review: Dietitan Delighted
As a Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator I am delighted that Pollan has put together one pouch with most all the jewels. The system while well meaning is not yet optimizing our access to the path of health.

Customer Review: SAFETY SUNGLASSES
GREAT SUNGLASSES AND THEY`RE ALSO SAFETY GLASSES AS WELL.

THESE ARE BETTER THAN THE EXPENSIVE PAIR OF SERENGETTI SUNGLASSES I ACCIDENTALLY DROPPED AND SHATTERED ONE OF THE LENSES OF. THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO AUTOMATICALLY CHANGE COLOR TOO, BUT I COULD NEVER TELL THE DIFFERENCE. THESE REALLY DO LIGHTEN AND DARKEN WITH CHANGING CONDITIONS. AND THEY COME WITH A CASE, A DETAIL NOT ADVERTISED IN THE AD.I`M A TRUCKER,SO SUNGLASSES ARE IMPORTANT TO ME.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE. I MAY EVEN BUY A SECOND PAIR FOR DOING MY LAWN MOWING WITH.

Customer Review: UV400
Seamless transition indoor to outside and back, no reason to ever remove vision wise. However, I do experience some discomfort after 8+ hours of wearing. Other than that I love these glasses.

See ya in the hills…

Customer Review: the best ski movie ever made
i must have first seen this when i was 6 or 7. i still own it. i cannot express how much i wish that this would get released on dvd. i would buy it in seconds and i believe that most of the ski community would do so as well.

this cronicles the ski adventures of scott schmidt, glen plake and mike hattrup as they travel the globe to “far off exciting ski places”. some of which are telluride, chamonix, snow bird, squaw valley, etc.

it also contains plenty of “shorts” (wheel of destruction), plenty of interviews, craziness, and some of the most beautiful skiing i’ve ever seen in my life.

this may sound super cheesey, but this makes me more nostalgic than just about any other thing that i own. i have almost cried on occasions when watching this. if you haven’t seen this you’re probablly not going to be super impressed, it’s really really dated. however, if you have seen this, you know what i’m talking about!

Breakthrough On Skis I, Expert Skiing Simplified

July 21st, 2008

Breakthrough On Skis I, Expert Skiing Simplified
Welcome to Breakthrough on Skis #1, my first ski teaching video. Creating this video has been one of my most exciting ski teaching experiences. I think this video may be one of the best ski lessons I’ve ever given. And of course, I’m hoping that using this video will be one of your very best ski-learning experiences…

But calling this video of Breakthrough on Skis a ski lesson is a bit inaccurate. This one-hour tape contains all the material–the movements and techniques, the practice patterns and explanations–that I would normally share with intermediate skiers during one full week of lessons. And this tells you that however useful this video may be, it’s not an instant shortcut to expert skiing. But it is a clear, effective, workable road map that can get you there. Using this tape to guide your own learning experience on skis, you can become an expert skier. And you should. It’s well worth it. The payoff for the concentration, patience and practice you put into this process is enormous. You’ve suspected it all along, and I can confirm it. Expert skiers have more fun. And the freedom of effortless, efficient turns on any slope is not an unreasonable goal for most skiers-even though few seem to reach it.

My explanation of this distressing fact is simple. Most skiers, even experienced long-time skiers, don’t ski like experts simply because they don’t know how experts do it. Superficially, expert skiing looks like an improved, polished version of average intermediate skiing. But it’s not. Experts use a fundamentally different set of movements patterns as they sail down the slopes. And the goal of this video (and of my book, ) is to show you these few critical expert movement patterns in such a clear, easy to understand way that you can literally transform your skiing. It works.

Of course, it would be easier if I could ski with you for a week. I could make sure it worked, by carefully structuring our time together, by choosing the practice terrain, by balancing short intense periods of concentrated practice with longer breaks of relaxing skiing where new skills “soak in” through repetition, by repeating demonstrations and explanations often enough that the key ideas and images of expert skiing remain sharp and clearly focused.

But instead of a week-long series of ski lessons, you have a videotape, a television and a VCR–and a lot of good will, a real desire for a breakthrough on skis. So I’d like to offer you a few suggestions on the best ways you can use this tape to achieve that breakthrough: some are obvious, some less so, some not at all.

Customer Review: Great ski lesson… with a couple of cautions…
I love, love, love this ski video. My sister and I ski about 30-40 days a year and we watch this video a LOT. We watch it practically nightly, when we are off skiing. And with every viewing we get something out of the “video lesson”.

I agree with nearly all of the positive reviews.

My only caveat… many people are in the Intermediate Rut because of some perpetually hanging on, unbroken bad habit (or habits).

A very common bad habit is being too far back on the skis. I spend the first few days of every ski season… and every ski week for that matter… retraining myself to get those shins solidly in the front of my boots. This is not my natural inclination and I have to really WORK at this habit. Even after years and years of skiing.

And Lito’s advice of “And forget that old thing about being forward on your skis. Stand tall… on the middle of your ski… in the middle of your boot…” REALLY set me back for a couple of years. You may be balanced on the middle of your ski… but you still have to be flexed and have that shin FIRMLY in the tongue of your boot!

Another habit… Upper and lower body separation (or dynamic anticipation, as Lito calls it) is also a very difficult concept to master. There are MANY more good tips for working on this skill, in addition to the ones suggested in this video. And taking a lesson may give you some BETTER tips than this video provides for breaking that habit.

Sometimes the best feedback is to have somebody video tape you… and to actually SEE yourself skiing, locked in position with a rigid body. You may FEEL like you are following Lito’s advice. You may FEEL like you are skiing with dynamic anticipation, or that you have gotten the habit of upper and lower body anticipation down. But getting feedback from another person, an instructor, a clinic or a video of yourself, can tell you otherwise.

Many, many times the thing that keeps us in an intermediate rut is a bad habit. If you know or suspect that you have a bad habit (or two… or six!) keep working at it. Go ahead and watch this video. It is really GREAT to watch really, really good skiers; skiing really, really, well. He gives a LOT of good tips and advice.

But in addition to this video, get feedback and take some lessons from real life skiing instructors. The tips on this video may not be enough to break your bad habits that are keeping you in that intermediate rut… and, if like me… if you have been told that YOUR particular bad habit, that continues to plague you, is skiing from the back seat… this video my actually encourage your faulty skiing technique.

Thus, my 4 stars rather than 5.

Customer Review: Out of this world
My wife and I are intermediate skiers who began skiing a couple of years ago. Our first ski was where we were told that ‘the wedge’ is the ONE and ONLY way to go. After two years we were still stuck with the wedge even down the intermediate slopes. True, the wedge idea got us going, but we were unable to get ouf that rut… unitl we bought this DVD. This is such a wonderful video that I bet it is better than any class out there. The booklet that is attached on the DVD conver summarizes all the lessons. The lessons themselves, are not difficult to memorize as they are all about building your foundations. We improved dramatically overnight. I got the other two videos too. Can’t wait to see and learn from them. Good bye Wedge.. and all you ski schools out there…!

Accelerade Sports Drink Seasoned athletes have been mixing Accelerade powder for years, because it works . So, just like always, Accelerade is available in ready - to - mix powder in 15 - , 30 - and 60 - servings canisters . Why Accelerade is Better? Beyond hydration During exercise, an athlete’s body needs fluids . Period . That’s why replenishing fluids during exercise is crucial - especially in the heat . When the body loses fluids through sweating, body temperature elevates and exercise performance drops . This isn’t a good thing . The most important function of a sports drink is to rehydrate . But a drained body also needs to restore energy and electrolytes . That’s why so many athletes choose carbohydrate and electrolyte - rich sports drinks instead of water . Sodium is the primary electrolyte lost in sweat followed by potassium . That’s why both are included in sports drinks . These electrolytes can serve to enhance flavor and encourage athletes to drink more . They also promote fluid retention . The addition of carbohydrates can delay fatigue during prolonged exercise and improve performance . But, carbohydrates and electrolytes aren’t the only thing an athlete’s body needs . Along comes Accelerade - the first sports drink to contain carbohydrates and protein in a patented 4:1 ratio . A ratio? Yes, a ratio . The inclusion of just the right amount of protein in Accelerade facilitates rehydration by optimizing the absorption of fluid . In 2006, researchers at St . Cloud University demonstrated that consuming Accelerade following cycling exercise significantly enhanced rehydration by 15% compared to a conventional sports drink and 40% compared to water . How does this happen? Accelerade contains two macronutrients (protein and carbohydrates) and each macronutrient uses a separate transport system or ‘door’ to enter into the body’s circulation from the intestine . As carbohydrates and protein enter, they bring sodium and water with them . So with the a

Surfer Magazine: Surfing Legends
Customer Review: Don’t waste your money
Never before have my husband and I looked at each other and cringed so many times while watching a video. The sound quality is poor, the editing choppy, and the point of the video is actually to promote Surfer Magazine (and evidently a couple of other surfing videos. There is no mention of how to purchase the other videos though). Some of the edits are so lazy that they actually left in the “stay tuned” promos from ESPN2(?) My husband (a displaced surfer) and I agreed that there is one shot worth seeing, but otherwise you never get to see the full wave developing, only tight shots of the guys on their boards.

Customer Review: AWESOME, GREAT , FANTASTIC CD
I purchased this on 4/25/03 and cannot seem to stop playing it. “old days, old ways” has that great EWF feel. This cd has a funk/jazz feel, but yet contemporary as well, I have been looking for this type of jazz for a while. This is cd is the reason why I love jazz. I look for jazz like this. The uptempo style will seriously get you into a groove. Reminds me of the late great GEORGE HOWARD style. I would give it 6 STARS. Great Jazz!!!

    Customer Review: Tele is back
For anyone who wants to do the hardest thing on the mountain. They need to watch this!! Alpine, Snow skates, and Boarders can’t hold a candle to the Skiers in this film. No mater who you are or what you do if you enjoy the snow or so called “extreem sports” you will enjoy this film.
