Train To Climb Mt Rainier This informative video provides a comprehensive six-month training program for the novice-to-intermediate level alpine climber who wants to climb Mt. Rainier and other high-altitude peaks. Included in the video are guidelines for aerobic, anaerobic, and climbing-specific training including flexibility and strength exercises selected for high-altitude mountaineering conditioning requirements. If you have been searching for a coach who climbs or for an exercise program specific to glacier travel, you’ll find plenty of excellent training ideas on this video. Mountaineer coaches and instructors Doug Schurman and Courtenay Schurman demonstrate the exercises with the help of climbing model Susan Wright.
In this 66 minute video you will learn details about the following training components: Aerobic training - Including alpine, outside, and indoor options along with suggested targets to try to reach by month 5.
Flexibility - Including stretches that are most applicable to the mountaineer and how to do them outside.
Strength training - Demonstration of exercises selected to help you with particular aspects of alpine climbing, showing traditional weights and home training options such as jugs of water and weighted packs.
Anaerobic training - Recommendations and guidelines for ways to raise the anaerobic threshold.
Climbing specific training - Specific training tips to emulate the physical requirements of the climb for optimal preparation.
The video concludes with a periodized training program specifying how to incorporate the components listed above over a 6-month period. Whether you have access to mountains or not, this video will provide you with all the physical conditioning information you need in order to optimally prepare for your climb.
Customer Review: Train To Climb Mt Rainier
There aren’t too many training videos available on mountaineering. Actually this is the only one I know. Even books are rare. I really enjoyd the set of mountaineering specific gym exercises and stretches. I got new ideas for my training sessions. Also the suggested 6-month training program was very thorough and unique. Being able to do all that one must be fit enough for Mt. Rainier. I have only climbed European 4-thousand-meter peaks and 5-6 hours/wk of endurance training during the last 3 months before the trip has been enough so far (2-4 hours/wk during off season). Maybe the long summit day makes Mt. Rainier harder than e.g. Mont Blanc. I wish the DVD had included more endurance training on top of strength and flexibility training. Why they always make these documents so short? Mountaineering is a hobby of passion! I could easily watch a 20-hour training video on climbing high mountains. It’s good that they left training for other climbing sports out in the document, because I think the audience is different. It shows that the video was made years ago, which isn’t necessarily a flaw. Video and sound quality are good enough for the purpose, but what is more important is that the takes are long and stabile. I just hate the modern restless “millisecond/take” style. More videos like this, please!
Customer Review: Cool DVD on Mt. Rainier climbing
We love to provide our guests with movies and books on Mt. Rainier. We picked up three of these to put one at each of our Mt. Rainier cabins at Three Bears Lodge.
