The Brain Fitness Program

July 5th, 2008

The Brain Fitness Program
The Brain Fitness Program is based on the brain’s ability to change and adapt, even rewire itself. In the past two years, a team of scientists has developed computer-based stimulus sets that drive beneficial chemical, physical and functional changes in the brain. Dr. Michael Merzenich of the University of California and his colleagues share their scientifically-based set of brain exercises in this life-altering program.

Customer Review: Mistake
Thought this would be some exercises and things to do to improve the brain. It says Brain fitness Program. It turned out to be a copy of the PBS program and not a program for brain fitness. Hana

Customer Review: Great exercise video for children!
We purchased this exercise video for our 7 year old Diabetic child. Although the video is designed for younger children (up to age 6, I believe) we selected this video based on reviews. This video is very captivating and fun, and is well suited for 7-8 year old children, too. It is basic exercises, designed so that children that are new to regular exercise routines will have no problem learning the routines. This is a great, well designed, colorful and fun video that is sure to captivate children as they exercise!
Customer Review: Fun & upbeat!
My children had so much fun exercising with Kristi and JoJo the bear. We all loved the cute songs and caught ourself singing them the rest of the day. This video is fun, upbeat, and really encouraged my children to get up and exercise. It is one of the best kids video’s out there!

Jack Lalanne’s 108709 Power Juicer Deluxe Electric Juicer, Stainless/Black

July 5th, 2008

Jack Lalanne’s 108709 Power Juicer Deluxe Electric Juicer, Stainless/Black
Features: Super-sized detachable pulp collector. Stainless steel exterior with black accents. Extra-large round chute accommodates most fruits and vegetables. Special patented extraction technology delivers up to 30% more juice than other juicers. High performance 3,600 RPM induction motor with a lifetime warranty and whisper-quiet operation.

Customer Review: juicer
I like the juicer but there are a couple design problems. The spout does not open up very much. The base stops the spout thus if you are not careful the juice backs up if it is somewhat thick. I like to make enough juice to fill a 12-16oz cup. This won’t fit under the unit. I have solved this by placing the juicer on a high counter with the spout over the edge. I then catch the juice with a funnel placed in the cup. I was determined to make this purchase work out. Other helpful hints, keep a blender near by for your bananas and papaya these will not work in the juicer. Then mix your juice from the juicer into the blender to blend. Enjoy, where there is a will there is a way.

Customer Review: Not the best product.
The concept is great of juicing your way to health but the design has alot to be desired. If you’re not careful, you will wind up with pulp all over the walls. So not only are you cleaning the juicer but spending extra time cleaning the walls too. The info-mercial raves about how little pulp there is in the collector unit but what they fail to show you is how much also accumulates on the underside of the top piece of the unit. The big selling point was the 3 easy payments. I thought about returning it within the first 30 days but figured since I paid so much for shipping, I might as well keep it and deal with the shortcomings. Juicing is still a good option.

Note: I also have another Braun juicer from 20 years ago or so and it still works great and there’s no chance of the pulp hitting the walls on that one. The only thing with this one is that the chute is very small. I will be taking this juicer to the office so I can juice at work.

ESPN International Winter Sports 2002

July 5th, 2008

ESPN International Winter Sports 2002
Experience the thrills and brutal spills of cold-air competition with ESPN International Winter Sports 2002. The game’s 10 fast-paced events include downhill alpine skiing, freestyle mogul skiing, bobsledding, speed skating, and more. Carve gates at death-defying speeds in the slalom or bust big air in the ski jump. There’s even a curling competition. Compete in the trial mode and select events with aspirations of gold and record smashing. While in championship mode–the highest level of difficulty–you pick one country and compete in all events. Choose to represent the U.S., England, Canada, France, Holland, Italy, Japan, or Germany. Each country has its own unique characteristics and abilities as well as strengths and weaknesses. A two-player split-screen mode lets you go head-to-head in an in-your-face test of speed and skills. Crisp graphics render the winter conditions realistically, letting you spray snow in the slalom or stare down the glare of ice that faces you in the treacherous bobsled run.

Customer Review: But it has curling!
While the reviewer from Redmont is correct on every count (poor training levels, steep learning curve, inconsistent graphic quality between games and lack of total control), I feel the game should get two points just for its inclusion of sports not normally handled by console games — and while this category would include figure skating (go see how many console and computer games you can find with this one — far less than snowboarding!) most importantly it includes curling… an extremely addictive sport once you get into it either as a participant or spectator (sort of like golf, which is also from Scotland: people who aren’t addicts think it is slow and boring but once you pick up the nuances you can’t get enough of it).

Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide
Finding the Right Bike
To really enjoy cycling, it’s important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you’re in the market for a new bike:

The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

  • Road and Racing Bikes–As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
  • Mountain Bikes–With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike–even one that you use regularly on trails–adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
  • Comfort/Cruiser Bikes–For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price
A bike’s price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.

  • Entry-level–You’ll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
  • Mid-range–Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you’re looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the “sweet spot.” Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
  • High-end–Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultra-lightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

  • Stand-over Height–To find out if a bike’s overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you’ll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you’ll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
  • Top Tube Length–You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike’s posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
  • Bikes for Women–Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women’s bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories
When you make a bike purchase, don’t forget these crucial add-ons:

  • Helmet (this is a must!)
  • Seat pack
  • Lock
  • Hydration pack, or water bottles and bottle cages
  • Spare tubes
  • Portable bike pump
  • Gloves

Customer Review: Jeep should take its name off this horrible bike!
I bought this bike thinking since Jeep put its name on it then it should be a great, tough, rock solid ride! Boy was I wrong! Not only the bike feels cheap and extremely heavy, its mechanics are worst part. After taking it to a bike shop to get it tuned professionally, 10 of its gears still don’t work. Now you may say well the mechanic did a quick crappy job, let me tell ya, I stood by the guy as he worked on it for 2 hours yet the gears still didn’t work. Overall, I’d have to give this bike two thumbs down. You’re better off buying a bike from walmart!

Customer Review: Big stumble for Amazon!
The one star is for Amazon’s packaging treatment. I ordered 2 Sigg water bottles for my family and they put both of them into a giant, huge( 19″ x 13″ ) box, with some air pack (you know, the air pillows?).

Hmmm… let me think: unwrapped, painted metal bottles, large empty box, loose packagang material - sound like a great chance for everything to get banged together and scratched up for 2 days during transit! Whadda deal!

Soooo diappointed. Did they have to use such a big box? This all could have been avoided by wrapping the bottles in some plastic baggies and putting them in a small box with a cardboard divider between. New hire? No small boxes? Can you tell I’m livid beyond belief? They’re lucky they hide their phone number.
Customer Review: Classic Sigg Water Bottle
*****
This is an upscale designer water bottle, top of the line, and so much fun. The designs Of Sigg’s water bottles are gorgeous, from the plain, solid color bottles, to the ones with intricate designs. They are simply beautiful! These bottles are the latest 2007 “Nature’s Bouquet” designs!

I switched from regular plastic water bottles because of health concerns, thinking it would take more work to maintain. These do necessitate regular cleaning (I clean mine every day), but having something so beautiful to drink from makes the cleaning fun. Sort of like my rings, glasses, and watch, I now consider my Sigg personal water bottle a vital accessory, reminding me to drink more water, making a statement about my values, and expressing myself with a special design. Yes, all in a water bottle!

Sigg of Switzerland water bottles are very high quality, made of light aluminum on the outside, slightly insulated, and covered with a special powder coat on the inside that prevents any leaching whatsoever, unlike plastic and polycarbonate water bottles. They are light, durable, and perfect for any activity. Well water tastes spectacular in these bottles, just like from the tap.

Sigg bottles come with several different types of tops. I bought the screw top because I don’t like sports tops, and I don’t mind unscrewing the top when I want a drink. It is totally leakproof, which is important to me. The top is pretty and can be hooked onto a carabiner. I get comments on it all the time, “What’s that? I love it!” The sports top version is ok; I just am not a fan, as I don’t feel like I can get enough water from the little stream from the sports top. However, for convenience, you might prefer it. For children, there is a cap-type top. All are leak-proof. If you are ever unsatisfied with the top, you can buy a screw top separately to fit your Sigg bottle.

Sigg makes their personal water bottle in .6L and 1L in this style. I have both. I use the .6L for sports activities because they are smaller. When I won’t have to carry the container, I like the larger bottle. Sigg also makes a smaller .3L bottle for children that is a perfect size for young people. You can buy Siggs in alternative sizes too, such as .75L, .4L (for kids), .6L, .5L. You can occasionally find this bottle in the 1.5L size, also. Search Amazon for the perfect size.

Pick a style and pattern you like, as this bottle is a personal accessory, and should reflect your style. The colors are vibrant and even prettier than they seem in the pictures on Amazon.

They are expensive, but they are so durable that you can plan on them lasting many years. I consider them both an accessory and an investment in my health, so they are well worth it value-wise for me.

Highly recommended.

Men’s Keen Newport The Newport is the foundation of the Keen Footwear line. Designed to perform in adverse conditions, the razor sipped outsole and 3mm lugs provide excellent traction. A true hybrid, the waterproof uppers withstand the abuse of saltwater and dirt, while providing supple comfort and stylish looks.
Customer Review: Shoes to love…
I’ve owned my Men’s Keen Newports for over two years - three summers and now 3 days before Christmas in the third winter. Sadly I usually have to put them away for weeks at a time from January thru March, but even so I DO wear them off and on in the dead of winter. I am NOT easy on these either. I’m a pro photographer and very active in the outdoors of Washington and the Pacific Northwest. they see more than their share of salt water while kayaking and boating and climbing up and down rough terrain to “get the shot.” Admittedly, when I’m not ‘out there’ my studio is next to my house so I wear them like slippers to “commute” across the garden and into the studio. They still look pretty good too, though I think I’ll be due for an additional pair this coming summer, though I see no reason to not continue to wear these for saltwater use.

One thing I should mention though is if you wear them barefoot continually, you will need to give them a soapy soak periodically because they will begin to stink ( documented by several of my friends also). But I’ll wear them with socks when it gets chilly (but not when it rains) during the fall and winter and washing is unnecessary. I’ll go for the Newports again.
Customer Review: Best comfort and durability I have ever seen in a sandal
By far one of the most comfortable, if not the most comfortable shoe or sandal I have ever owned. Now that summer is over, and it is late Fall, I find myself still wearing these even now that it is colder because they feel so good. I bought mine in May, and it is November now. They really are tough to give up. Any reservations I had that they look funky evaporated when I wore them. If they do not feel right when you put them on, you probably have the wrong size. Most people that buy Keens find that they need to buy a half size larger than they do with other shoes.

They have a wide toebox so that your toes are not cramped together, and they are the first to come out with the protective toe guard. While other companies are starting to put toe guards on their shoes, they are not designed to be both protective and completely comfortable like Keens. I never stub a toe or catch a toe on anything with these, plus I can hide my ugly toes. It also has a little rise on the rear heel that cups your heel comfortably, but also helps protect you against those people that step on the back of your foot. It feels very secure once it is on and does not slip. There are no straps to fool with or Velcro to adjust, it has an inner lining that looks like the neoprene on a scuba suit, it stretches to fit. It has a no lace closure and you set it once, from then on it slips on easy. The metatomic footbed cradles my foot like no shoe I have ever seen. A feature I had not experienced before in any shoe is the little ridge on the inner sole that runs behind the toes and in between your big toe and other toes. The first time you feel it is a surprise, but it turns out to add to the comfort of the shoe immensely. That ridge forms in a short time to your foot, giving you your own custom fit. Keens shoes are invented by a doctor, who studied the anatomy of the foot very closely, and it shows. I hate to gush about this, but the shape of this shoe inside and out gives me a sensation that the shoe is part of me, and I can stand longer and walk longer… it makes me feel like running. I first saw these on some ultralight backpackers I met, they swore by them.

It has an anatomical outer sole that is very grippy, with a nice athletic shape, it gives good traction on sand, dirt, boulders, mud, you name it. It is not slippery on the boat or dock, and the sole does not leave any marks. It is made in such a way that it does not hold dirt in any grooves to track ion on my carpet either. It is great for water, and you can wear it into the stream, pool, or sea. If it gets wet, for some reason you don’t feel it due to the material that wicks the water away. It has an anti-microbial treatment that takes away any germs.

The first Newport that came out has leather trim, but it is officially waterproof. The newer Newport H2 is made of completely synthetic materials, and it holds up better in the long run as far as repeated wettings and mud. When my H2’s get dirty, I throw them in the sink, under the hose, or even in the washer and they come out like new. I wore these almost daily for 4 months straight with no evidence of wear. This includes standing in line all day at theme parks and scrambling at the beach and lava rocks on Maui. These come in many colors. Keens makes other great shoes like the Providence boots, clogs, and tennis shoes. My other favorite sandals are for dressier occasions, they are the black Rieker Anti-Stress Jens 09176, and the brown Dunham Moose Fisherman (actually designed by New Balance).

Customer Review: Thinkthin bars
I travel for work at least twice a month and it’s very difficult to eat on the road and on the run. I use these bars as a meal replacement and not a weight loss product. It shocks me that high protein and work out food bars all seem to have some unwanted ingredient….they mostly all have partially hydrogenated oils in them… ThinkThin does not….the ingredients are perfect!!

I would recommend it to anyone who has just been dropped the bomb of diabetes and needs some quick and easy help figuring out how to count carbs.

Parents will do almost anything to get their kids to eat healthier, but unfortunately, they’ve found that begging, pleading, threatening, and bribing don’t work. With their patience wearing thin, parents will “give in” for the sake of family peace, and reach for “kiddie” favorites–often nutritionally inferior choices such as fried fish sticks, mac n’ cheese, Pop-sicles, and cookies.

Missy Chase Lapine, former publisher of Eating Well magazine, faced the same challenges with her two young daughters, and she sought a solution. Now in The Sneaky Chef, Lapine presents over 75 recipes that ingeniously disguise the most important superfoods inside kids’ favorite meals. With the addition of a few simple make-ahead purees or clever replacements, (some may surprise you!) parents can pack more fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants in their kids’ foods. Examples of “Sneaky” recipes include:

-No Harm Chicken Parm
-Power Pizza
-Incognito Burritos
-Guerilla Grilled Cheese
-Brainy Brownies
-Health-by-Chocolate Cookies
-Quick fixes for Jell-O(R)

It’s a book chock-full of strategies that will help any parent incorporate better health for the whole family.

Customer Review: Like the Idea, but Doubt the Nutrition
I use many of the ideas from this book in my day-to-day cooking, though I do not follow any of the recipes. Basically, I hide a little baby food in the mac-and-cheese, the pizza, etc. I have no problem with not volunteering that I am adding vegetables, though I would not lie if my children asked (and they had a couple of times, when things were an odd color). I do, however, doubt that a few tablespoons of veggies are really going to make a significant different in the health of my children.
Customer Review: Love it
Excellent healthy ideas on how to prepare meals for my toddler who just started throwing all his food to the dog. Great healthy quick ideas too. Better tasting and MUCH more healthy than Jessica Seinfelds book…

Customer Review: a solid product
These things are very solid, and I’ve noticed a large difference in what I’ve been able to deadlift with their help. I added 70 lbs to my max, just from the difference between my grip vs overall strength. The padding is good, the fit is comfortable, and they do their job. I can’t ask for more.

EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control Nutrition Bar, Chocolate Cream Pie, 2.11 oz (Pack of 12)
Customer Review: Review for EAS Protein Bars
For a protein supplement this bar has relatively low carbs and no sugar.

Customer Review: Best Low Carb Bars On The Market Today
I finally found the best tasting low carb bars on the market today. They taste like a candy bar, not tasteless crunchy cardboard, which only discourages you from sticking with your diet plan. Besides the Chocolate Cream Pie the Cookies and Cream bars are also delicious. Try them, you’ll be very happy you did.

Three major neurotransmitters (Serotonin, Dopamine and Norepinephrine) in the brain must be in balance for a balanced mood. When in an unbalanced state with each other, mood drops or depresses. Deprex’s The complex of homeopathic medicinals in Deprex are much more powerful than one ingredient by itself because it not only supplies the precursors to these key mood-controlling neurotransmitters Deprex is a scientifically advanced cerebral homeopathic medicinal designed to provide relief from mild depression and depressive disorders, including mood changes, mood imbalances and melancholy, and/or extended periods of simple sadness and grief. Deprex also provides nutritional and medicinal support for those going through periods of disappointment and/or rejection. Unlike prescriptive antidepressant medications, Deprex is a non-prescriptive, alternative, providing the necessary precursors which complement the body’s ability to potentiate the production and release of a very important naturally occurring neurotransmitter called Serotonin, which plays an important part in mood regulation, as well as increase Serotonin and Norepinephrine activity. This potentiates the rebalancing of brain biochemistry, which in turn allows corrective perceptual processing of information and affect, insulating one stimulus from another for perceptual integrity and clarity, helping the individual to develop more constructive coping strategies, with an absence of anxiety. The cause of most depression: Serotonin and Norepinephrine producing centers and interactive pathways become disrupted and imbalanced regarding respective receptor sensitivities and inhibitory mechanisms, and the Hypothalamus becomes dysfunctional. Pictured above: Cross section of the Brain and the Pathways responsible for Serotonin and Norepinephrine production and distribution, and the Hypothalamus. Biochemical disruption in these areas have been shown to result in various forms of depression.

Customer Review: this shaker bottle is great
im 16 and im way into bodybuilding and when im done at the gym i lik to go into the locker room and make a protein shake and this shaker bottle is good just for that idont no wat the other guy is using but this works with the stuff i use and theres nothing ever stuck at the top. and its blue
Customer Review: Not that great, Not that bad
This bottle gets the job done, but it could be better. After you shake it up and open the drink spout, there will most likely be powder caught on the spot. There will also be very thick shake at the bottom of it when its almost gone. I think the mian problem is that if you want ot mixed perfect you need a blender.
